The concert is co-organized by the Fund for the Support and Encouragement of the Overseas Vietnamese Community, the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the US RASS Company and the An Ninh The Gioi (World Security) Newspaper.

At the event, audiences will have a cultural exchange with Miss World 2007, Zhang Zhi Li, and Miss World 2008, who will be crowned on December 13, 2008.

Several outstanding overseas Vietnamese individuals and businesses will also be honoured for their great contributions to the development of the Fund.

Audiences will have the opportunity to enjoy performances by well-known overseas Vietnamese singers such as Thanh Ha, Phi Nhung, Ai Van, Linda Trang Dai, Tommy Ngo, musician Hoang Thi Thi as well as famous local artists, including Dam Vinh Hung, Quang Linh, Quang Dung, Ho Ngoc Ha and Mat Troi Moi (New Sun) band.

The VND 1.2 billion programme will be held on an imposing stage emboldened with Vietnamese traditional culture.

All the money rose from ticket sales and donations will go to the Fund for the Support and Encouragement of the Overseas Vietnamese Community.

Speaking at the launch ceremony, MCST Minister Hoang Tuan Anh said that, as well as being part of the priceless heritage of the world at large, world heritage sites in Vietnam are national treasures and the pride of the country and its people.

Ha Long Bay , in addition to three other sites, namely Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park , Mt. Fansipan and the Mekong River, are included in a list of candidates for seven new world wonders, offering an opportunity for Vietnam to promote its image, culture, beauty and position around the world, he said.

The minister called upon localities, agencies, and political and social organizations, as well as individuals to continue registering their votes for Vietnam’s natural wonders.

Following the ceremony, thousands of local youths formed a parade along the streets of Da Nang to encourage locals to participate in the voting.

Ha Long Bay currently ranks second out of 77 candidates in the online poll for the seven new natural wonders of the world, launched by NewOpenWord.

The books, in English, introduced 12 traditional dishes and 12 contemporary dishes from Hanoi and northeastern region.

Didier Corlou, who has lived and worked in Vietnam for over 15 years, said that the books were compiled in a year.

He informed that the authors plan to study and write about dishes in the northwestern, central and southern regions in the coming time. Corlou expressed his hope that Vietnamese dishes would be known by numerous foreign people.

In 2004, Corlou’s book entitled “Vietnamese Gastronomy” won prizes of best book on gastronomy in western region and best book on Asian gastronomy.

The collection will be published in French and Vietnamese languages in the coming time.

A central farmer’s perseverance and hard work transforms a deserted plot of land into a resplendent ecotourism center.

Standing amidst lush green environs filled with flower orchards and bamboo groves, Nguyen Phuoc Hung took a moment to reminisce back to when this plot of earth was an arid wasteland untouched by local residents.

The owner and director of one of central Da Nang City’s most popular ecotourism centers used to be a regular farmer who was granted 30 hectares of land by the government in Hoa Vang District’s Phu Tuc Hamlet.

At that time 12 years ago, there was only a small river called Suoi Hoa running through the vast territory.

The center is located in Hoa Vang District’s Phu Tuc Hamlet, Hoa Phu Village, about 30 kilometers east of Da Nang City.

Entrance tickets are priced at VND10,000 for adults and VND5,000 for children. Guests can also rent lodging for overnight stays at costs ranging from VND50,000-300,000.

Wild pigs raised on site offer tasty meals for visitors

Hung proceeded to set up a small tent near the river and started doing what he loves most – planting trees and flowers.

Many locals thought he was crazy, as they believed the land was uncultivable and his efforts would all go for naught. But Hung didn’t worry about the naysayers as he was bent on transforming the desert land into something greener and more hospitable to life.

Between 1997 and 2000, Hung and his workers managed to sow numerous varieties of plants in the forest area west of nearby Hoa Phu Village. At his farm, he cultivated bamboos and various fruit trees while also raising cattle and fish.

Following years of hard work, Hung’s farm nowadays features around 2,500 bamboo trees producing 50 tons of bamboo shoots a year; two hectares of grass feeding a herd of 40 cows 300 betel trees and 1,000 apricot blossoms.

In 2000, Hung decided to take on the challenge of converting his farm into a major ecotourism center to introduce to visitors the best that nature had to offer.

“The main idea behind developing an ecotourism center is to promote public awareness about protecting our environment,” Hung said. “We’ve always kept that goal in mind while designing the Suoi Hoa Ecotourism Center to not cause any damages to the surrounding areas and harm residents.”

The center, situated 500 meters above sea level, required an investment of VND10 billion that Hung took out as a loan and the idealistic farmer also hired many members of the local Co Tu ethnic minority group to build and maintain the grounds. The area now encompasses a number of pretty waterfalls and lakes and workers have landscape the various flower species into neat rows, using carved stones and other ornaments as decoration.

With more than 100 bungalows on site, the center is capable of hosting thousands of visitors each day. On the grounds, there is even a 7,000-square-meter football field used by professional football teams, 11 ponds with several used for raising fish, and an area to breed around 100 wild pigs.

For tourists and visitors who enjoy outdoor picnics, a meal with grilled fish caught from one of the ponds provides an unforgettable experience.

David Nguyen, who visited Suoi Hoa along with eight family members from the US, said one of the best things about the site is the panoramic view it offers of the entire Da Nang City.

“It is located in an absolutely ideal location,” Nguyen said.

Another visitor, Hoang Quan, said he works in Da Nang City but often visits Suoi Hoa with family members and relatives every two or three months.

“We feel like we can really take in nature here after the long exhausting workdays in the city,” Quan said.

The center currently employs 40 people, but Hung said he’s thinking about hiring more locals to organize activities such as making “ruou can,” a type of wine drunk out of a jar, and knitting traditional products to give tourists a glimpse into the Co Tu people’s lives.

While the project has started yielding profit, Hung said his proudest achievement has been “to cover the landscape with greeneries and flowers.”

“I want to impart a lesson of perseverance in environmental protection and remind all visitors of the vital role they can play in creating greener spaces to contribute to the public good,” Hung said.

The 2008 Cuisine Festival will take place on December 5 in Ho Chi Minh City to promote the food culture of Vietnam and other countries.

Twenty-one top international restaurants and hotels, representing the cuisine of 16 countries will participate in the event, co-held by the city Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Tourism Association and Saigontourist Corporation.

As special guest of the event, the Republic of Korea will hold a photographic exhibition of traditional Korean dishes, a display of the cooking art Jewel in the Palace and traditional performances.

Other events include an attempt to break the Vietnam record for grilled pork on a skewer with a 10 m long kebab, making a Vietnamese flag from Sushi, a cooking talent contest and a seminar on Vietnamese cuisine and culture.

The festival will run until December 7 at Van Thanh Tourism Area in Binh Thanh District.

Đức Đạt Lai Lạt Ma thứ 14 (Tenzin Gyatso), người đứng đầu đất nước và tinh thần của Tây Tạng, sinh ngày 6 tháng 7 năm 1935 trong một gia đình nông dân tại Taktser, Amdo, Đông bắc Tây Tạng. Những ước nguyện – những niềm tin thiêng liêng của người đã trở thành triết lý sống, giáo hóa soi sáng cho bao nhiêu người trên thế giới này với ba tôn chỉ sau:

Với góc độ con người, niềm tin thứ nhất của Đức Lạt Ma là tôn vinh các giá trị con người như lòng nhân, tha thứ, khoan dung, sự chấp nhận và kỷ luật tự giác. Tất cả con người đều bình đẳng. Tất cả chúng ta đều muốn hạnh phúc và không muốn khổ đau.. ngay cả những người không tin vào tôn giáo vẫn thừa nhận sự quan trọng của các giá trị con người để làm cho cuộc sống hạnh phúc hơn. Đức Lạt Ma nói về những giá trị con người này như những giá trị bất diệt, các qui tắc đạo lý muôn đời.

Với góc độ một nhà lãnh đạo tôn giáo, niềm tin thứ hai của người là sự cổ súy tinh thần hòa hợp và hiểu biết giữa các tôn giáo lớn trên thế giới. Cho dù có khác biệt về triết lý, mọi tôn giáo chính trên thế giới đều có chung khả năng xây dựng những con người tốt đẹp, thiện lương. Do đó, điều quan trọng là các truyền thống tôn giáo phải tôn trọng nhau và thừa nhận giá trị riêng của mỗi tôn giáo. Mỗi tôn giáo , một chân lý , đều có giá trị phù hợp xét về khía cạnh cá nhân. Về góc độ cộng đồng nói chung, nhiều tôn giáo, nhiều chân lý là cần thiết.

Người là người Tây Tạng và có tên Đạt Lai Lạt Ma. Người dân Tây Tạng đặt niềm tin ở Người. Niềm tin thứ ba của Người về vấn đề của Tây Tạng là trách nhiệm của người như một người phát ngôn tự do của nhân dân Tây Tạng trong cuộc đấu tranh vì công lý của họ. Ước nguyện này sẽ chấm dứt khi có một giải pháp hai bên cùng có lợi giữa Tây Tạng và Trung Quốc. Xin giới thiệu với các bạn 20 lời dạy hay trong số những tư tưởng đẹp của Đức Đạt Lai Lạt Ma về một số chủ đề đa dạng như tình yêu, lòng nhân từ, hòa bình, giá trị sống và môi trường.



1. Hạnh phúc không phải là một sản phẩm có sẵn, hay một ý niệm. Hạnh phúc đến từ hành động của chính chúng ta.

2. Nếu có thể, hãy giúp đỡ tha nhân; nếu không thể, xin ít nhất đừng làm tổn hại ai.

3. Nếu bạn muốn những người khác hạnh phúc, hãy thực hành tâm từ bi. Nếu muốn mình hạnh phúc, thực hành tâm từ bi.

4. Tôn giáo của tôi thật giản đơn. Lòng tốt là tôn giáo của tôi.

5. Xin nhớ rằng những mong ước mà ta không đạt được đôi khi lại là một điều may mắn tuyệt vời trong ánh chớp của số phận.

6. Quyền năng cao nhất luôn có được từ lương tri và khả năng phân tích phán đoán.

7. Ta có thể sống không có tôn giáo và thiền định, nhưng chúng ta không thể tồn tại mà thiếu tình yêu thương.

8. Chẳng bao giờ ta có thể có được hòa bình trên thế giới nếu chưa tìm được an bình trong chính tâm ta.

9. Sống nhân hậu và tử tế bất kỳ ở đâu và khi nào có thể. Chúng ta luôn có thể thực hiện điều này.

10. Nếu bạn sợ đau khổ, bạn nên suy nghĩ xem mình có thể làm gì để giải quyết những nỗi chịu đựng này. Nếu bạn có thể, không cần phải lo lắng nữa; nếu bạn không thể làm gì, cũng không cần phải lo âu.

11. Nếu bạn không yêu chính mình, làm thế nào bạn có thể yêu người? Nếu bạn không có từ tâm với chính mình thì bạn không thể phát triển từ tâm với người khác.

12. Tiềm năng của mọi người là như nhau. Cảm giác về mình “ Tôi không có giá trị” là sai lầm, một sai lầm hoàn toàn. Bạn đang lừa dối chính mình. Tất cả chúng ta đều có khả năng tư duy- vậy thì cái bạn thiếu là gì? Nếu bạn có sự tự chủ, bạn có thể thay đổi bất cứ điều gì. Người ta thường nói bạn là chủ nhân của chính bạn.

13. Chúng ta phải thừa nhận rằng nỗi đau của một kiếp người hay của một đất nước cũng là nỗi đau của nhân loại. Và rằng hạnh phúc của một con người hay một quốc gia là hạnh phúc của nhân loại.

14. Bằng bạo lực, bạn có thể “giải quyết” một vấn đề, nhưng bạn lại gieo mầm cho một vấn đề khác.

15. Với tư cách là những người đang sống hôm nay, chúng ta phải nghĩ đến các thế hệ tương lai: một môi trường sạch là một quyền chính đáng của con người như bất kỳ điều nào của nhân quyền. Do đó một phần trách nhiệm của chúng ta với người khác là đảm bảo rằng thế giới mà chúng ta chuyển giao lại cho thế hệ tương lai là an bình, nếu không phải là an bình hơn cái thế giới ban đầu ta tìm thấy.

16. Chiến thắng chính mình là một chiến thắng vĩ đại, vinh quang hơn chiến thắng hàng ngàn người trong một trận chiến.

17. Có một câu ngạn ngữ Tây Tạng: “Bi kịch phải được xem như cội nguồn của sức mạnh.” Dẫu có bất kỳ khó khăn nào, dẫu trải nghiệm của chúng ta có đớn đau dường nào, nếu ta từ bỏ hi vọng, đó chính là thảm họa thực sự của chúng ta.

18. Các sinh vật cư trú trên hành tinh này- dẫu là con người hay loài động vật nào- đều góp phần theo cách riêng của mình tô điểm cho cái đẹp và sự đa dạng phong phú, thịnh vượng của thế giới này.

19. Một cái thìa chẳng thể nếm trải hương vị của thức ăn mà nó chứa. Hệt như thế, một kẻ u mê không thể hiểu sự thông tuệ của một bậc trí giả ngay cả khi kẻ ngu ấy giao tiếp với một hiền nhân.

20. Trong cuộc chiến đấu vì tự do, chân lý là vũ khí duy nhất chúng ta có được.

Two customers enjoy a drink at Thanh Son Zen Tea shop in Ho Chi Minh City
Having tea is a special affair for two white-collar workers named Tran Ha Phuong and Tran Duong in Ho Chi Minh City, who often frequent teashops to relax after a hard working day.

“There are thousands of café shops or bars in the city, but teashops still attract many young people like us,” Duong said.

One of the women’s favorite spots is Thanh Son Zen Tea located at 17 Tran Quy Khoach Street in District 1, unique for its Buddhist decorations and serene ambiance.

“We come here not only to enjoy delicious teas, but also to learn how to enjoy the beverage in the proper manner,” Phuong said.

There are two types of tearoom at the shop – a big one to host groups of patrons and a private room.

The tea room features bamboo mats, black tables, and calligraphy pictures and lanterns hanging from the walls. Several green bamboo groves are strategically placed in the room’s corners hiding speakers that emanate sounds of trickling springs, temple bells and bird melodies. The interior layout creates a sense of peace and quietude for customers to escape from the hectic urban environment outside.

Before entering the tearoom, Phuong and Duong have to take off their shoes, turn off their cell phones, and talk in a low voice according to the regulations posted at the door.

More than 20 kinds of tea ranging from tra cung dinh (royal tea) to tra kho qua (colocynth tea) – each of which requires a different method of preparation – and 10 types of sweet cakes like banh com sua (rice milk cake) and banh dua nuong (coconut cake) are served from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Phuong and Duong order tra sen (lotus tea) and ginger candies to warm their spirits after the last rainfalls of the year. The women brew the liquid, pour out cups for one another, and read the calligraphy verses hanging on the wall while sipping their tea.

Don’t talk about wealth or social positions.

Just enjoy your cup of tea.”
